People come to hiking for many different reasons that can enrich the body, the mind and the spirit. Hiking brings all the benefits of a good walk. It burns calories, strengthens muscles and fills the lungs with fresh air. It is also a great way to meet people and enjoy the social chat that opens up while hiking a trail together. Being surrounded by the natural environment is inspirational and invigorating. And when a hike is completed, there can be a great sense of personal achievement. It is a very accessible activity that needs very little to get started and yet it connects with something bigger than us.

Body Fitness From Hiking

The opportunity for physical exercise and fitness is an attraction for many hikers. Walking along an undulating trail can develop aerobic fitness and tone muscles. Rock-hopping across a stream requires balance, particularly with the extra weight of a backpack. For an overnight hike, the weight of a backpack carrying camping gear for a night or two can accentuate aerobic fitness, muscle-toning and balance. But even on the shortest of trails, body fitness through the simple act of walking can be a welcome by-product of hiking.

Hiking Calms the Mind

Another reason that people hike is to simply enjoy being in nature. Hiking offers an escape from the hustle bustle of cars and machines and hundreds of people. The natural environment brings beauty and solace. It calms the mind and brings a sense of space. Being surrounded by a large expanse of natural forest or being on a mountain top, can make troubles seem smaller and the opportunities of life larger and brighter. But, sometimes, it can also be daunting to be away from familiar places. This challenge makes hiking attractive to some.
