The staff of a glossy magazine consists of various individuals organised into departments, each of whom bring their unique talents to create the finished product that is sold on the shop shelves. The editor is the ruler of all these departments – think of it as a small kingdom, where the king or queen instructs their subjects in their work, and either approves of what they produce, when it’ll be published as part of the magazine, or disapproves, in which case it’s “off with their heads”. Well, only with certain demanding editors perhaps – as in The Devil Wears Prada, allegedly based on Vogue editor Anna Wintour.)

If you want to write for magazines, the features department is your main point of contact. They are the ones to pitch your ideas to and who will provide you with a brief to follow, if they commission any of your ideas. But what happens to your precious piece of writing between the version you submit and the one that’s eventually published?

Behind the scenes

The sub-editors (or copy editors) are the ones who get copy (publishing term for written text) ready for publication. The tasks of a sub-editor can range from correcting bad grammar and spelling, fact-checking and looking for any potential legal issues to rewriting badly-written copy into house style (the tone and style of the magazine), to make it an interesting, informative and well-written feature.
