The Panzerkampfwagon II was one of Nazi Germany’s first front-line main battle tanks, pressed into service due to the delay of its larger brethren, the Pz.Kpfw.III and IV.

The initial design period was relatively short for the vehicle first designated ‘2cm MG Panzerwagon’, with the initial order for a 10-ton armoured fighting vehicle being placed by the Waffenamt (Ordnance Department) in July 1934 and the first soft-steel prototype being put through its paces by October 1935. Deliveries of the first production models were slow as changes were made to the design, and several prototypes were even sent to Spain for full-scale trails during the Civil War (1936-39.)
