Depending on your definition, groups like Dream Theater, Marillion and even Muse and Radiohead fly the banner of progressive rock in modern times. The boundaries of the genre are largely dependent on the individual music fan or journalist. For that reason, progressive rock's origins also come into question frequently. There are some trends that can be pinpointed that were definitely involved in the start of progressive rock, though.

The Beatles

Many progressive rock historians will point to the Beatles, and more specifically the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" as the first progressive rock release. Certainly the disc challenged the idea of all songs needing a certain structure to work. It also stretched the boundaries of rock music. It was a concept album. All of these elements are common in progressive rock. It was (as were the Beatles in general), very influential in terms of turning the heads of many of the musicians who would become the core of the progressive rock movement. For that reason, the argument is a strong one.

Procol Harum

Songs like the lushly arranged "A Whiter Shade of Pale" are considered by many to be progressive rock. There are others who point to some of their more pure rock and pop music and say the group wasn't progressive rock. Certainly their rise to fame in 1967 was contemporary to the Beatles' first reputed entry into prog rock. Procol Harum is another that (whether you consider them to be prog or not) were influential on early progressive rock.
