One of the first bureaucratic challenges for new residents in Italy is obtaining an Italian Driver's License. After 12 months of obtaining residency in Italy, non-European Union foreign citizens must obtain an Italian Driver's License to be able to legally drive, even if they are in possession of an International Driver's License.

If a foreign national who is resident for more than 12 months continues to drive without obtaining an Italian Driver's License, it is considered the same as driving without a license or with an expired license, and penalties can be stiff.

According to the legislation (art. 126 of the Highway Code) governing road licenses, fines can be up to 624 euros and can entail a period of disqualification from driving.
