Redecorate a bedroom in an afternoon without breaking the bank or a fingernail. Whip up a quilt, sham and drapes with sheets bought at a discount store. Then use the scraps to cover a lampshade, toss pillow or bulletin board. Follow these simple instructions to get started.

Gather Basic Supplies:

  • 2 Sheet sets
  • Quilt batting
  • Thread
  • Yarn or embroidery floss
  • 1-inch blanket binding
  • Decorative tape
  • Lace or decorative edging
  • Sewing machine or hand stitching needles
  • Quilting pins
  • Fabric scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Iron

Optional Items:

  • Spray starch
  • Toss pillow forms
  • Bulletin board or cork sheet
  • Lampshade

Make the Quilt

Wash, dry and iron the sheets. Carefully cut off the top hem of the flat sheets. Place one sheet, face down, on the floor. Lay quilt batting on the sheet. Trim the batting, so there is a 1/2-inch fabric border on all four sides. Place the second sheet, face up, on top of the batting.

Divide the quilt into 6-inch blocks using the measuring tape. Mark the corners of the blocks. Thread the quilting needle with a few strands of embroidery floss or yarn. Stitch each corner, pulling the thread through all of the layers. Tie each side in a double knot and snip the tail. Repeat this step for each of the remaining blocks. Trim any excess batting or uneven edges.
