The tenor is the highest of the male voices in the classical range, with the exception of the counter tenor, which is a specialised type of extremely high male voice. The phenomenon of The Three Tenors – Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras – brought both the vocal type and opera generally into the popular canon through their arena performances.
Types of Tenor Voices and the Roles They Play
Like other types of classical voices, the tenor has a number of different types, with roles being written specifically for those types within different genres. While the vocal range may differ slightly between types, it is the timbre and style of the voice that differentiates between them.
Lirico-Leggero Tenor
This is closest in style to the lyric coloratura style of women’s voices. It is characterised by its light, lyrical quality and agility, which enables the singer to tackle florid and technically difficult passages in bel canto style works. It is the highest in overall range of the tenor voices.
