The Eagle Scout Award is the highest award achievable in the Boy Scouts of America. After earning 21 merit badges, some required and some elective, the final step is the Eagle Scout Project. This project is designed to demonstrate the Scout’s leadership ability. The amount of time and labor that he puts in is less important than his ability to plan, carry out and supervise the project. There are many details to consider.

Selecting a Project for an Eagle Scout Award

The project must be a significant service project benefiting the community, a church or a non-profit organization. It cannot be for a commercial enterprise. It must allow for many man-hours – the total combined hours of all those who participate – yet how many people can be accommodated on site must be considered. Some questions to ask include: “Who will benefit?” “Who has the skills necessary that can be invited to be a mentor?” and “Where will the supplies and materials come from? Who will pay for them?”

An example of an appropriate Eagle Scout project is replacing wooden steps at a state park with rock steps. This project would require a person to be involved with rock laying experience. Cement and tools would have to be obtained, either by purchase, donation or borrowing. Often soliciting donations for the project is a significant part of the project.
